MRGCD Statement – E-Bikes

Wednesday, September 25, 2024

The Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District owns and manages 30,000 acres of bosque in Sandoval, Bernalillo, Valencia and Socorro Counties, it is committed to balancing the protection of this unique environment while supporting reasonable recreation use. After hearing from a large number of constituents requesting that MRGCD evaluate e-bike use within the Rio Grande Valley State Park, which is co-managed with the City of Albuquerque Open Space Division, the Board of Directors voted on a resolution to consider proposals to permit the use of e-bikes and powered micromobility devices on designated, paved asphalt of concrete-surfaced recreation trails managed by local government entities on MRGCD lands, pending the results of reasonable public input processes, trail manager support and approval and further consideration by the MRGCD Board of Directors.

Since the resolution has been signed, the MRGCD board and staff have met with several members of the community regarding the issue, offered significant time for open public discussion at its September meeting (listen here) and have been working with the City of Albuquerque Open Space on a public engagement process. The board and staff will be diligent in keeping the public informed of the process and timeline once fully developed.
